Animation Production Process at JPL's DIAL
(Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Digital Image Animation Laboratory)
Lecture, slide and video presentation by
Mr. Zareh Gorjian
Zareh Gorjian has been involved in the field of computer graphics for over twenty years. He received his BS
degree in Computer science in 1989 from Cal State University Northridge where his area of concentration was computer graphics. There he, with others, helped start the video Graphics lab under Dr. Melvin
Epstein's direction.
Upon graduation he started working at the Software Toolworks where he was part of the team that developed the
Miracle Piano Teaching System for the Nintendo. He worked on the graphics for this artificial intelligence system, which helped people learn to play the piano.
In July of 1990 he moved to the Digital Image Animation Lab (DIAL) at the jet Propulsion Laboratory. The
DIAL is well known for terrain "fly-by" animations they produce for NASA, the first of which was "LA The Move". He has been involved in the design and implementation of their 2nd and 3rd generation animation and rendering software. He was a part of the team, which produced animations for the IMAX movies "Destiny In Space" and "L5 First City In Space".
He completed his Master’s Degree in Computer Science form USC in December of 1994, again with special emphasis in
computer graphics. He currently is in charge of making animations for ongoing JPL missions to the outer planets. In addition to his academic and professional involvement with computer graphics, he engages
in the artistic pursuit of the subject at home.
